Formula Masses

When atoms combine to form compounds, some of their electrons arrange in a new way around the nuclei. However, the number of nuclei of each kind and the number of electrons are the same in the compounds as they are in the elements. Therefore, the formula masses of compounds are equal to the sum of the atomic masses of the atoms forming the compound. The formula masses of molecular compounds are often called molecular masses.
