Material hierarchy: Metal - Ferrous metal - Cast iron
Cast irons can be alloyed for special properties and applications. These alloy cast irons are classified as follows: (1) heat-treatable types that can be hardened by martensite formation; (2) corrosion-resistant types, whose alloying elements include nickel and chromium; and (3) heat-resistant types containing high proportions of nickel for hot hardness and resistance to high temperature oxidation.
