Explanation

For a force F, acting at any point on a body:



M_O = Fd

For a static body, the sum of the moments about any point = 0

Typically, the following sign convention is used for analysis of moments about a common point.

ΣM_O = 0

or

ΣM_O = 0

If clockwise is positive, then forces that support motion in the clockwise direction are positive, forces that oppose motion in the clockwise direction are negative.
